Kapil Divecha joined Courtiers in March 2019, achieving his Fellowship (FPFS) in Financial Planning in May 2023. He then moved up to become a Private Client Manager in September 2023. In April 2025, Kapil became Head of Private Clients, leading the national adviser team. We talk to him about what he hopes to achieve in the role and the changes he’s implementing to support our clients.
Kapil, what was your background before Courtiers?
Before Courtiers, I was employed by a top 10 globally recognised accountancy firm. I’d gained a lot of industry experience over many years, having worked in various roles including support, research and paraplanning. Having spent some time in this capacity, I realised helping clients achieve their goals is what I really wanted to do.
You’ve officially been Head of Private Clients for 99 days. What are you working on doing already?
I’ve been looking at how we can better support our clients. Geographically we had clients with advisers who weren’t in proximity, so face-to-face meetings were problematic. We also had clients needing specialist advice from an adviser with the most appropriate qualifications. Since January, I have been working across the Private Client team to make sure clients are matched with a Courtiers Adviser best placed for their needs. We are also continuing to increase the experience of the team by guiding them towards appropriate exams via the Courtiers Education Academy.
Have you been working on anything else to support our clients?
I’ve been working on integrating technology into our processes to improve communication with clients around our meetings, offer clients an easier way to feed back and identify what other support they might need.
We’ve enhanced our systems so we can spend more time working with and for our clients. We now have powerful tools to help us compile and process information, meeting summaries and action points effectively, allowing us to share outcomes swiftly while gaining more time to talk to clients. In doing so, Courtiers Advisers and clients can continue to work more openly and personally together.
We’ve also introduced a feedback system that asks clients about their meeting experience, offering them the opportunity to explain how we might improve the support we provide. Clients now have a chance to share feedback on how their Adviser’s doing, to help ensure we are working well together to achieve their goals.
Another area I am keen on improving is how quickly money can be released for clients. We obviously must provide regulatory advice and that includes writing reports and completing paperwork. We are looking into and using AI to improve these timescales.
It’s brilliant to see you so focused on client needs and outcomes. Is that what led you to specialise in pension switches and transfers yourself?
Absolutely, the client is always at the heart of everything we do. Pensions are a big part of clients achieving their retirement goals. I became a specialist to make sure, prior to any transfers or switches taking place, that we do what is right for the client. It’s important to remain true to our values – to listen to our clients, understand their needs and guide them to make sure clients have the best possible outcome for their wealth. If it wasn’t in their best interests, I wouldn’t sign off a transfer/switch for a client to move to, say, a Courtiers SIPP.
You’ve been with Courtiers for quite a few years now. What is it about Courtiers that keeps you here?
Both Jamie (CEO) and Gary (CIO) have grown the entire business on the premise of building long-term relationships with 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations. Working with clients for a long time in the same company means you gain a good insight of clients’ needs through both the good and bad times. There is great satisfaction in knowing the advice you and your team provide helps clients to achieve their financial goals and dreams.
Talking of family, you have two children, and are a football coach for your son’s football team, aren’t you?
Yes – I coach the Kidlington Youth Tigers. I’ve coached them for five years – since the players were six-years-old, and last year they won the Oxfordshire FA League cup – earning us an impressive trophy! This year we have already won one tournament and got to the finals in Charlbury, but unfortunately didn’t win.
Jamie Shepperd, Courtiers CEO, had this to say about Kapil’s promotion to Head of Private Clients:
“Kapil was the obvious choice to become the new Courtiers Head of Private Clients. He’s achieved Fellowship status, showcasing outstanding technical knowledge, and remains dedicated to guiding the adviser team towards a higher standard while enabling them to spend more time with clients.”
